On Saturday 5th March, Mini Babybel and Comic Relief come together and attempt to set the Guinness World Record for the most jokes told in an hour. Doing Something Funny for Money, Mini Babybel will once again help Comic Relief to raise money this Red Nose Day. The sidesplitting event will be hosted by comedy favourites Dick & Dom and contestants will be challenged to tell as many cheesy jokes as possible in 60 minutes. The Guinness World Record attempt takes place between 3pm and 4pm at Maidstone Leisure Centre in Kent – don’t miss out on what is sure to be a fun packed day for all the family!

Long-term Comic Relief supporters, Dick & Dom, will start the stopwatch at 3pm with exactly one hour on the clock for contestants to cram as many cheesy jokes in as possible. Anyone can sign up with Mini Babybel for the chance to go down in history and meet the comedy duo in person. To take part simply register your details at babybelcheesyjokes.co.uk.

Dick & Dom say:

“This is going to be a great day for everyone and there’ll be loads to do so bring the whole family. We’ve joined forces with Mini Babybel to attempt to set a Guinness World Record this Red Nose Day and have a big laugh at the same time! There will be some of the best and we’re sure, the worst jokes around, it’s all for a fantastic cause and the best thing is, anyone can join in!”

Dick & Dom have teamed up with Mini Babybel and Comic Relief to host this rib-tickling attempt at setting a new Guinness World Record. The pair have won two BAFTA Awards for ‘Dick and Dom in da Bungalow’, presented a Sunday Morning show on BBC Radio 1 and hosted Sky 1’s ‘Are You Smarter Than A Ten Year Old?’ Whether it’s charity or television the boys always manage to sneak in a cheeky smile making them the perfect hosts for Babybel’s Cheesy Jokes World Record.

If you can’t make it to the event on 5th March there are a number of other ways to get involved with Mini Babybel and help raise money. With Mini Babybel’s Cheesy Smiles All Round Campaign, all you have to do is submit your cheesiest jokes onto babybelcheesyjokes.co.uk and for every submitted joke Babybel donates 10p to Comic Relief. Keep an eye out for the special promotional packs of Mini Babybel original, light and cheddar with 6p from each special 6-pack sold and 12p from each special 12-pack sold going to Comic Relief.

Stand-up comedian Russell Kane, the star of television’s Let’s Dance star joined by Peep Show’s Isy Suttie and others to raise money in their sleep as Breathe Right launches the UK’s first Lie Down Comedy Gig.

On Monday 28th February, Russell Kane put on his slippers and hopped under the covers with fellow comedians Isy Suttie, Alun Cochrane, Iain Stirling and Chris Ramsey. They performed stand-up from the comfort of their beds at the Leicester Square Theatre, London – a UK first!

Also watching the show from under their duvets were 400 competition winners who wore limited edition red Breathe Right nasal strips to celebrate one of the easiest ways to donate to Red Nose Day this year – just by getting your snooze on!

‘Do It In Your Sleep’ by purchasing a £1 limited edition pack of red Breathe Right nasal strips, with at least 12p from every pack helping raise at least £150,000 for Comic Relief. The limited edition strips are available via GSK Direct at www.gskdirect.co.uk/rednoseday or leading retailers nationwide.

They may have been in their pyjamas but the comedians had the audience wide awake with their award winning stand up routines, insisting that raising money for Comic Relief should be easy and this year they could ‘Do It In Their Sleep’.

Since first introducing itself back on Christmas Day in 1985, Comic Relief has captured the hearts of the British public with its relentless energy and constant new ideas to promote comedy while raising money for charity.

It was on Noel Edmunds Late, Late Breakfast Show on BBC1, on Christmas Day 1985 that the brainchild of comedy script writer Richard Curtis came into existence, Comic Relief was a response from the world of comedy to the biggest fund raising music show ever staged in the summer of the same year, Live Aid.

It would be another couple of years before Red Nose Day became a fixture in the UK calendar, first being broadcast in 1988 when the obligatory plastic red noses were worn in return for a donation to the charity.

The general public had continued to show their generosity towards raising money for the victims of drought in Ethiopia, but surprisingly businesses also demonstrated a restrained tolerance towards Comic Relief and Red Nose day in particular by allowing ’semi holidays’ where employees were allowed to dress down or wear fancy dress for the day for donations.

Supported by the BBC, British Telecom and Sainsbury’s among many other organisations, this year sees British Airways pledge themselves to the cause when they team up with Guinness World Records, to claim the Highest Stand-Up Comedy Gig in the World.

The event will take place on Saturday March 12th and will represent the launch of British Airways year long partnership with Comic Relief called ‘Flying Start ‘, hoping to transform the lives of disadvantaged children at home and abroad.

The public are invited to take part in a competition to win 75 tickets for the comedy gig in the sky by visiting the British Airways Facebook page or texting ‘Fly1′ to 70300.

So if you fancy being trapped in an aeroplane for two and a half hours with Dara O’Briain, Jack Whitehall and Jon Richardson then take your chance in the competition. The free champagne and refreshments might just swing it for me!

The UK public are being encouraged to raise money for Comic Relief by purchasing a Red Nose strip produced by Breathe Right to aid breathing while asleep and help raise funds for the charity without having to leave their beds!

Isy Suttie

The Do It In Your Sleep campaign will collect money from every purchase of the limited edition nasal strips which have been produced to support the Comic Relief charity event.

In addition Breathe Right will sponsor the first ever ‘lie down’ comedy gig at the prestigious Leicester Square Theatre in London where the likes of Russell Kane, Peep Show’s Isy Suttie and Alun Cochrane will be putting on their slippers and hopping under the covers to perform sets from their bed to raise money for Comic Relief.

The nation’s first ever ‘lie down’ gig is being held at 7.30pm on 28th February at the Leicester Square Theatre, London and if you want to join in the laughter 200 free tickets to the gig are up for grabs at the facebook do it in your sleep page.

To support the release of the limited edition red coloured nasal strips Breathe Right conducted a survey to find the most popular celebrities that the public would choose to spend a night in the bedroom with.

Most men said they’d most like to wake up next to Kelly Brook (46%), yet opinion was much more divided on who they’d like to have a laugh with in the bedroom; with some men opting for long term supporters of Comic Relief, Dawn French (19%), Jo Brand (11%) or Miranda Hart (9%).

28% of women said they’d like to wake up next to Oscar nominated actor Colin Firth, but almost a quarter (23%) said that northern comic Peter Kay would be better for a chuckle in the bedroom.

Over half of respondents (51%) said that they’d prefer their bedroom buddy to be funny or have good banter, than be good looking (21%).

The same people were also asked to disclose their usual night time routines before retiring to bed, which threw up some strange responses. Bizarrely, some adults still check underneath their beds for monsters before they go to sleep, and say goodnight to their soft toys!

You can take part in the Do It In Your Sleep fund raiser by purchasing a £1 limited edition pack of red Breathe Right nasal strips, with at least 12p from every pack helping raise at least £150,000 for Comic Relief.

Billy Connolly has been one of Britain’s most well loved comedians since his first appearance on Michael Parkinson’s Saturday night BBC1 chat show where his joke about a man burying his wife bottom side up so he had somewhere to park his bike, brought him instant commercial success.

He became a good friend of Michael Parkinson and made a further fourteen appearances.

In the same year he signed a record deal with Polydor Records, and as well as releasing live comedy albums, enjoyed hit singles including parodies of Tammy Wynette’s song D.I.V.O.R.C.E. and In The Brownies to the tune of the Village People’s In the Navy.

His popularity continued throughout the 1980’s with live stand up performances at The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball (1981), Live Aid at Wembley (1985) and Comic Relief (1986). In 1987 he completed his first world tour, including six nights at the Royal Albert Hall in London, which was documented in the Billy and Albert video.

Rowan Atkinson has been on UK television for the past 30 years. From sketch writer and performer of the BBC satire Not The Nine O’Clock News, he has starred in the very successful Blackadder series, and as Mr Bean which went onto spawn two feature films – Bean: The Ultimate Disaster Movie and Mr Bean’s Holiday.

He has also appeared in several movies including The Tall Guy, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Scooby Doo, Love Actually and Johnny English.

Oliver – A West End Musical
But last year Rowan Atkinson decided to return to the stage to play Fagin in Oliver, a musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel.

Oliver opened on January 14, 2009 at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Rowan Atkinson last appeared on stage over 20 years ago with his one-man show Rowan Atkinson In Revue.

This new version of Lionel Bart’s Oliver musical attracted huge interest following prime time Saturday night TV exposure of auditions through the BBC talent show, I’d Do Anything whereby unknown ‘wannabies’ battled it out week after week for the chance to play Nancy and Oliver and become West End stars in the process.

You can buy Oliver Tickets now.

Speaking about his role as Fagin, Rowan Atkinson said:

“In the 1980s I enjoyed doing a lot of West End theatre and since then have been distracted very much by Mr Bean and film making. I had been thinking for some time about returning to the stage and the idea of the role of Fagin, which has long intrigued me – some time ago I even played the role in a school production – seemed like too good an opportunity to miss.”

Rowan Atkinson will star as Fagin until 18 July 2009.

Red Nose Day
On Friday 13th March Comic Relief will be celebrating another Red Nose Day to raise money for children in the UK and Africa. Comic Relief is also releasing a DVD of classic British comedy next week called Now That’s What I Call Comedy. Included is the very funny sketch Mr Bean’s Wedding – a sketch recorded especially for Comic Relief in 2007.

Comic Relief (2003) – Lying To Michael Jackson

In 2003 Rowan Atkinson teamed up with Lenny Henry in a comedy sketch parody of a documentary that where Michael Jackson gave BBC journalist Martin Bashir license to make a fly-on-the-wall documentary that was supposed to show the ‘real’ Michael Jackson, and in the process dismiss many of the rumours and child abuse accusations of the time that had turned Jackson’s King of Pop squeaky clean image into a publicist’s nightmare.

The documentary was called Living With Michael Jackson.

Unfortunately the ‘real’ Michael Jackson portrayed in the documentary was not the one Michael Jackson and his lawyers wanted the documentary to portray, and accusations and threats of legal action, followed.

Lenny Henry plays Michael Jackson and Rowan Atkinson plays Martin Bashir in the sketch Lying to Michael Jackson that was recorded for Comic Relief Red Nose Day in 2003.

For anyone who has not seen the real documentary, it shows Michael Jackson opening up to the reporter as he believes he is a friend and fan of his music. Lying To Michael Jackson starts with Bashir (Rowan Atkinson) saying “Michael, I’m your best friend. I love everything you do. This film is going to make everyone in the whole world think you are fabulous in every way. Trust Me, you’re going to come out of this, so well”

Jermaine Jackson has stated that brother Michael will join brothers Tiito, Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon and Randy on stage at their Jackson 5 reunion concerts in 2008.

Asked if Michael will be there, Jermaine said: “He has to be, he is a Jackson. He was at the meetings. Michael will be involved.”
