It is fair to say that there are plenty of plumbers and other tradesmen in the UK who this sketch was based upon and I speak from personal experience.

How is that everyone else manages to find tradesmen who are able to complete a job with the minimum of fuss, even less old chat and leave the house clean and tidy.

It never seems enough to bother with the job that they have been called in to repair, they are always looking for ‘extras’,  for example fixing the bits that they break while attempting the initial job.

And always there is that fearful intake of breath at first sight of the job, ensuring that the customer is on the back foot before quoting an exorbitant price.

Harry Enfield has a fantastic gift of observation, something that he normally exagerates in the characters that he creates, but the plumber character he portrays is too real for words!

Of course, there are plenty of decent plumbers around the UK and thankfully there are many prepared to do a fair job for a fair wage without spending half the day drinking cups of sweet tea and complaining about whoever put the pipework in when the house was built.
