Russell Kane performs stand-up lying down for Comic Relief

Terry Lane - Tuesday 01.03.11, 18:14pm

Stand-up comedian Russell Kane, the star of television’s Let’s Dance star joined by Peep Show’s Isy Suttie and others to raise money in their sleep as Breathe Right launches the UK’s first Lie Down Comedy Gig.

On Monday 28th February, Russell Kane put on his slippers and hopped under the covers with fellow comedians Isy Suttie, Alun Cochrane, Iain Stirling and Chris Ramsey. They performed stand-up from the comfort of their beds at the Leicester Square Theatre, London – a UK first!

Also watching the show from under their duvets were 400 competition winners who wore limited edition red Breathe Right nasal strips to celebrate one of the easiest ways to donate to Red Nose Day this year – just by getting your snooze on!

‘Do It In Your Sleep’ by purchasing a £1 limited edition pack of red Breathe Right nasal strips, with at least 12p from every pack helping raise at least £150,000 for Comic Relief. The limited edition strips are available via GSK Direct at www.gskdirect.co.uk/rednoseday or leading retailers nationwide.

They may have been in their pyjamas but the comedians had the audience wide awake with their award winning stand up routines, insisting that raising money for Comic Relief should be easy and this year they could ‘Do It In Their Sleep’.

You are invited to the Highest Stand-Up Gig in the World

John Williams - Wednesday 16.02.11, 17:42pm

Since first introducing itself back on Christmas Day in 1985, Comic Relief has captured the hearts of the British public with its relentless energy and constant new ideas to promote comedy while raising money for charity.

It was on Noel Edmunds Late, Late Breakfast Show on BBC1, on Christmas Day 1985 that the brainchild of comedy script writer Richard Curtis came into existence, Comic Relief was a response from the world of comedy to the biggest fund raising music show ever staged in the summer of the same year, Live Aid.

It would be another couple of years before Red Nose Day became a fixture in the UK calendar, first being broadcast in 1988 when the obligatory plastic red noses were worn in return for a donation to the charity.

The general public had continued to show their generosity towards raising money for the victims of drought in Ethiopia, but surprisingly businesses also demonstrated a restrained tolerance towards Comic Relief and Red Nose day in particular by allowing ’semi holidays’ where employees were allowed to dress down or wear fancy dress for the day for donations.

Supported by the BBC, British Telecom and Sainsbury’s among many other organisations, this year sees British Airways pledge themselves to the cause when they team up with Guinness World Records, to claim the Highest Stand-Up Comedy Gig in the World.

The event will take place on Saturday March 12th and will represent the launch of British Airways year long partnership with Comic Relief called ‘Flying Start , hoping to transform the lives of disadvantaged children at home and abroad.

The public are invited to take part in a competition to win 75 tickets for the comedy gig in the sky by visiting the British Airways Facebook page or texting ‘Fly1′ to 70300.

So if you fancy being trapped in an aeroplane for two and a half hours with Dara O’Briain, Jack Whitehall and Jon Richardson then take your chance in the competition. The free champagne and refreshments might just swing it for me!

BBC TV Episodes DVD

Episodes is a hilarious new comedy series from the highly acclaimed writing partnership of David Crane (Friends) and Jeffrey Klarik (Mad About You).

Episodes is the story of a happily married English couple, Sean and Beverly Lincoln who also happen to be successful producers of a hit British TV show called Lyman’s Boys.

At an awards ceremony in London they are wooed by a hugely powerful and charismatic US network executive who persuades them to move out to LA and remake their hit show for an American audience – with disastrous results.

Things begin to unravel at Sean and Beverly’s first studio meeting. It soon becomes clear that the network president has never even seen their show.To make matters worse, he insists they replace their lead actor, a Royal Shakespeare veteran played by Richard Griffiths with Matt LeBlanc. Sean and Beverly are appalled. But the decision is out of their hands. Matt comes on board and they find themselves in a complicated triangle, which threatens to destroy not just their TV show but their marriage too.

The quintessential US comedy star Matt LeBlanc plays a larger than life version of himself. Joining him are Tamsin Greig (Green Wing, Love Soup, Shaun of the Dead), Stephen Mangan (Free Agents, Never Better, Green Wing), Kathleen Rose Perkins (Without A Trace, Tell Me You Love Me), Mircea Monroe (Scrubs, Without A Trace), Daisy Haggard (Psychoville,Sense and Sensibility) and Richard Griffiths (The History Boys, Withnail and I).

Alongside his very understanding and tolerant wife Betty (Michelle Dotrice), Frank Spencer tries to hold down a job and generally get on in life, often with disastrous yet hilarious consequences.

Written by Raymond Allen and starring Michael Crawford, Some Mother’s Do ‘Ave ‘Em was one of the biggest situation comedies on British television in the 1970’s and continues to be shown to this day.  Each episode contains dangerous stunts that were undertaken by Crawford himself.

The show is fondly remembered and gave the world the catchphrase ‘Ooh Betty’.  This new boxset includes four DVD’s containing all three series and an extra disc with all the Christmas Specials.
